| Conwy
Situated on the North Wales coast, with spectacular views towards
Conwy, Llandudno and across the sea to Anglesey, bordered by the
Snowdonia hills, Conwy golf club boasts a superb links course, with
excellent facilities for both members and visitors.
Over the past twelve months we have invested in a fairway irrigation
system, created new bunkers and reconstructed the existing bunkers;
additionally our visitosrs will enjoy our refurbished changing facilities.
In the run-up to our hosting the qualifying round for the Open Championship,
(the first club in Wales to have this honour), there can be no better
time to enjoy the challenge of playing at Conwy Golf Club.
Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club lies at the mouth of the River
Conwy, overlooked on its south side by Conwy Mountain and on its
north side overlooking the Estuary and Llandudno's Great Orme. A
truly magical setting on land known locally for hundreds of years
at "The Morfa", which was originally a marshy area, shaping
the south side of the estuary.
It is known that as far back at 1869, three enthusiastic Scotsmen
laid out a few roughly made holes for their own amusement on The
Morfa, and they may have been the first to play golf on Welsh soil.
However it was a group of members from The Royal Liverpool Club
in Hoylake who realised the potential of The Morfa and who in 1875
had a professionally designed course laid out, consisting of 12
holes.
However it was not until June 30th 1890 that The Caernarvonshire
(Conwy) Golf Club was officially formed and a military mess hut,
presented by a volunteer regiment from a neighbouring army camp,
was secured as a Clubhouse and officially opened on 30th July, 1890
by the Club's first Captain, Mr. Sydney Platt.
In 1895 the course was extended to 18 holes and within four years
the club staged it's first Welsh National Championship which was
won by F. E. Woodhead, a club member. Also in 1895, the club became
one of the founding members of the Welsh Golfing Union. Over the
years, the course has seen many changes and is a typical links course,
providing a stern test of golf, particularly over the last five
holes, where an abundance of gorse adds to the challenge. Very rarely
are there days when the wind does not blow and it is this added
factor which, as on so many links courses, can make or break a round.
The present clubhouse completed in 1996 is the fifth the members
have occupied since 1875 and a montage in this club traces the history
of the moves to its present site.
Since 1899 many Championships have been played at Conwy, including
Welsh Amateur and Stroke Play, both British Ladies Open Amateur
and Stroke Play, World One Armed, and the European Boys Team Championship.
In addition we have hosted The Home Internationals and Boys Home
Internationals together with the Martini Professional and Welsh
Professional Championships.
Whoever visits our course and clubhouse can be assured of a warm
welcome together with a stern and memorable test of golf.
