| Nefyn
and District
Nefyn and District Golf Club was formed in 1907. The course was
converted from 9 holes to 18 holes in 1912 and after many minor
transformations, a further 9 holes were added in 1933 (only 26 holes
are now being played). The course now consists of a front 10 holes
and two distinctly different back 8 holes.
It is a proud boast of the club and its members that you can see
the sea from every tee on the course. The epithet "This is
the most beautiful course I have ever played" has come both
from visitors from all over the world and from many critical reviews
in books and magazines.
The Course is played all year round and like the Windmill Theatre,
we boast "We never close". In fact during 1999 Nefyn and
District Golf Club was closed for only one day due to the course
being unplayable. The remainder of the 364 days, members and visitors
enjoyed unrivalled sea and mountain views from all 26 holes. Similarly,
in the extremely wet autumn of 2000, up to the end of November,
the course remained open, while other coastal and particularly inland
courses were closed due to the wet weather. Our Head Green keeper,
Patrick McAteer and his skilled team work hard to keep open and
maintain the course throughout the year to the very highest standards.
Famous names who have played our course, include Ian Woosnam (he
holds the course record for the "Old Course"), Ronan Rafferty,
Peter Allis, Mike Atherton and Clement Attlee. Currently, 23 year
old Member Mark Pilkington is beginning to make a real impact the
European P.G.A. Tour. The Club and its Members wish him increasing
success in the forthcoming season.
The Club and its facilities have expanded over the years to keep
up with modern golfing requirements. If you want a cup of tea, pint
of beer, snack/meal, hot shower, buggy, game of snooker, new set
of clubs, golfing clothes and accessories or a lesson from our resident
professional John Froom, all are available. What we cannot guarantee,
is the weather, or that you will manage to drive the cliffs and
land on the fairways, not "the beach"! That's up to you
to come and try! What we can guarantee, is that you will not forget
the experience.

The Old Course
The "Old Course" is a Par 70/71, measures 6138 yards,
with a SSS of 71. The first 10 holes of the course have the 2nd,
3rd and 4th holes bordering on cliffs. The 5th hole has a spectacular
tee jutting out over the sea. The route back to the clubhouse from
the 6th onwards, looking over both sea and mountains, has some of
the best views of the surrounding scenery on the course.
On favourable days, it is even possible to see the tops of the Wicklow
Mountains in Ireland.
The back 8 follows the peninsular which surrounds Porth Dinllaen
bay and gives spectacular views of both the surrounding bay and
cliffs. In the far distance, both Anglesey and Snowdonia can be
seen on most days. The 13th hole on the "Old Course" is
very challenging, where the brave (or foolish) and the long can
"go for it" across the cliffs. The 14th on the Old Course
is probably the signature hole for this part of the course, with
fantastic views over Porth Dinllaen Bay, towards the Rivals and
Anglesey.
The New Course
The "New Course" is a Par 71, measures 6548 yards (White
Tees), with a SSS of 71. The first 10 holes of the course have the
2nd, 3rd and 4th holes bordering on cliffs. The 5th hole has a spectacular
tee jutting out over the sea. The route back to the clubhouse from
the 6th onwards, looking over both sea and mountains, has some of
the best views of the surrounding scenery on the course. On favourable
days, it is even possible to see the tops of the Wicklow Mountains
in Ireland
The "New Course" back 8 follows gently rolling fairways
with strategically placed bunkers and some challenging rough for
the wayward player. The 15th is a Par 4 dog-leg left, with a relatively
long carry across AOB to cut off the corner. "Old Wil"
a somewhat taciturn character, can often be seen sitting patiently
in the gorse on the side of the bank, spotting every wayward ball
(not necessarily for your benefit!).
(The Club is situated just outside the village of Morfa Nefyn (B
4417), on the Private Road to Porth Dinllaen Village. The Club House
has recently been refurbished and has a Bar, Snooker Room, Lounge
and upstairs function room. There are panoramic views of the course
and sea from all rooms. the green is on the top of the cliffs)
